Kerwee Feedlot
- Stockyard's award winning feedlot, Kerwee, feeds selected Angus and Wagyu cattle
- Kerwee has recently doubled its holding capacity to 20, 200 head. Situated on the lush Darling Downs (approx. 3 hours from Brisbane) positioning it ideally for local feedstuffs and minimal travel time for stock to the processing facility
- Since the upgrade the feedmill outlays approx. 250t of feed per day.
- Cattle are fed a high energy ration specially formulated by animal nutritionists (including steam flaked grains, sunflower meal, corn silage, hay, vegetable oil and molasses)
- With the opening of the Kerwee Cattle Handling Facility in October 2013, the Kerwee Group has made a significant investment to ensure our cattle are handled with the upmost care and respect. Safe, low stress handling practises through a modern efficient facility contribute to a much better beef outcome. The yards are designed to keep cattle clean and promote a hygienic environment, which extends all the way to processing.
- Each animal has an ear tag which is specific to the individual animal. This is part of the NLIS (national livestock identification scheme) which is compulsory Australia wide and follows livestock movements. This scheme ensures traceability of each animal from birth to slaughter and maintains the safety, quality and integrity standards of Australian beef and reduces the impact of a potential livestock disease epidemic or residue incident making Australian beef the safest in the world.
- The Kerwee feedlot is the first commercial feedlot to adopt Growsafe net feed intake technology. This recently released technology measures the feeding performance and behaviour of individual animals. It will assist the business to further improve profitability through better decision making around feed efficiencies, animal health awareness and well-being and enable improved genetic selection using individual animal data.
- Kerwee has achieved many accreditations and awards including:
- National Feedlot Accreditation Scheme (NFAS No. 247) accredited. The key areas addressed by NFAS include animal welfare, feeding systems, environmental management and meat quality incorporating food safety.
- Meat Standards Australia (MSA)
- Livestock Production Assurance (LPA)
- Australian Feedlot of the Year (3,000 - 10,000 SCU capacity) 1997; 1998; 2008; 2010
